Compensation: $120,000–$135,000 base salary (depending on experience)

Position Summary

A leading billion-dollar electrical utility contractor is seeking an experienced Substation Safety Manager to support and strengthen safety performance across its substation construction operations in Ohio. This position plays a critical role in ensuring the company's commitment to safety excellence by partnering with operations, field leadership, and craft personnel to maintain a proactive, compliance-driven safety culture.

The successful candidate will be a visible presence in the field, providing coaching, conducting audits, investigating incidents, and ensuring all work is performed in accordance with OSHA regulations, company policies, and industry best practices. This role requires a hands-on safety professional who is comfortable working alongside construction crews and influencing safety at every level of the organization.
 

Key Responsibilities

  • Promote and reinforce a strong, proactive safety culture across substation construction projects.
  • Conduct regular jobsite inspections, safety audits, and hazard assessments to identify and mitigate risks.
  • Partner with Project Managers, Superintendents, General Foremen, and field crews to ensure safe work practices are consistently followed.
  • Lead incident investigations, determine root causes, and implement corrective and preventive actions.
  • Deliver safety training, orientations, toolbox talks, and ongoing coaching for field personnel.
  • Monitor compliance with OSHA regulations, company safety policies, and customer-specific safety requirements.
  • Review Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), pre-task plans, and other safety documentation to ensure compliance and effectiveness.
  • Track and report safety metrics, trends, corrective actions, and leading indicators.
  • Assist operations leadership in developing and implementing continuous safety improvement initiatives.
  • Support emergency response planning and participate in post-incident reviews as needed.
  • Maintain accurate safety records and documentation for internal and external reporting.
  • Travel throughout Ohio to support active substation construction projects.
 

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years of safety experience supporting electrical utility construction, heavy civil, industrial, or energy infrastructure projects.
  • Experience supporting substation construction projects is strongly preferred.
  • Thorough knowledge of OSHA regulations and construction safety standards.
  • Experience conducting field audits, incident investigations, and delivering safety training.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to influence field personnel and operational leadership.
  • Demonstrated ability to build trust and foster a positive safety culture.
  • Valid driver's license and willingness to travel to project sites throughout Ohio.
 

Preferred Qualifications

  • CHST, CSP, OHST, or other recognized safety certification.
  • OSHA 500, OSHA 510, or equivalent safety training credentials.
  • CPR/First Aid Instructor certification.
  • Experience working for an electrical utility contractor or EPC contractor.
  • Knowledge of utility owner safety requirements and substation commissioning activities.
