Vice President, Electrical Distribution Construction (Overhead and Underground)
Location: North Carolina or South Carolina (Regional Travel Required)
Position Summary
We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Vice President of Electrical Distribution Construction to lead and scale a growing utility infrastructure construction organization across the Carolinas and the Southeast. This executive leader will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of electrical distribution construction operations (OH & UG), including project execution, safety, financial performance, workforce development, client relationships, and strategic growth initiatives.
The Vice President will provide leadership to multiple operational teams responsible for the construction, maintenance, storm restoration, and upgrade of overhead and underground electric distribution systems. This role requires a proven utility construction executive with deep expertise in power delivery, operational excellence, and business development within regulated utility and contractor environments.
The successful candidate will play a key role in driving operational performance, expanding market presence, strengthening utility partnerships, and positioning the organization for long-term growth.
Key Responsibilities
Executive Leadership & Strategy
- Develop and execute strategic plans to support organizational growth, profitability, and operational excellence.
- Provide leadership and direction to regional operations, project management, field construction, safety, and support teams.
- Partner with executive leadership to establish annual business objectives, budgets, and performance metrics.
- Identify opportunities for market expansion, service diversification, and operational improvements.
- Build and maintain a high-performance culture focused on accountability, safety, quality, and customer satisfaction.
Operations Management
- Oversee all electrical distribution construction operations, including overhead, underground, maintenance, and system hardening projects.
- Ensure projects are delivered safely, on schedule, within budget, and in accordance with client requirements.
- Monitor operational performance, resource utilization, labor productivity, and equipment management.
- Implement best practices and continuous improvement initiatives to drive efficiency and profitability.
- Lead operational planning for storm response and emergency restoration activities.
Financial Management
- Maintain full P&L responsibility for a multi-state distribution construction business unit.
- Develop and manage annual operating budgets, forecasts, and capital plans.
- Drive revenue growth while maintaining strong margins and operational discipline.
- Review project financial performance, cost controls, contract compliance, and risk exposure.
- Support contract negotiations, major proposals, and strategic client agreements.
Client & Business Development
- Serve as a senior executive point of contact for utility clients, municipalities, cooperatives, and strategic partners.
- Develop and strengthen long-term relationships with key utility stakeholders and industry leaders.
- Support business development initiatives, competitive pursuits, and contract renewals.
- Collaborate with estimating and preconstruction teams on major opportunities and strategic bids.
- Represent the organization at industry events, conferences, and client meetings.
Safety & Workforce Development
- Champion a safety-first culture and ensure compliance with all OSHA, client, and company safety standards.
- Lead workforce planning, succession planning, recruiting, and leadership development initiatives.
- Mentor and develop senior operational leaders across the organization.
- Promote employee engagement, retention, and professional growth programs.
- Ensure adequate staffing and resource planning to support current and future business needs.
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Business, or a related field.
- 15+ years of progressive leadership experience within utility construction, power delivery, or electrical infrastructure.
- Significant executive or senior operational leadership experience overseeing electrical distribution construction operations.
- Proven experience managing large-scale utility contracts and multi-location operations.
- Strong understanding of overhead and underground electrical distribution systems.
- Demonstrated success managing large operational teams, regional business units, and complex project portfolios.
- Extensive P&L management experience with responsibility for revenue growth and profitability.
- Strong business development, client management, and contract negotiation skills.
- Exceptional leadership, communication, and organizational abilities.
- Ability to travel throughout North Carolina, South Carolina, and surrounding regions as needed.
Preferred
- Experience working with investor-owned utilities, electric cooperatives, and municipal utilities.
- Background with large utility contractors, EPC firms, or self-perform utility construction organizations.
- MBA or advanced business degree.
- Experience leading storm restoration and emergency response operations.
- Familiarity with utility modernization, grid hardening, undergrounding, and renewable energy interconnection projects.
